Air Greenland Prepares for Expansion Ahead of New Airport Launch

Following six years of development, the new airport in Ilulissat is scheduled to open its doors on October 29. On this day, Air Greenland will introduce a new route connecting Ilulissat to Copenhagen. The first flight will be operated by the Airbus A330neo, followed by Jettime using the Boeing 737-800, and then transitioning to the new A320neo in April 2027.

Greenland is on the brink of a significant change in air travel with the upcoming opening of the third airport in the last two years. Following the recent inauguration of two new airports, the new airport with a 2,200-meter runway in Nuuk officially began operations on November 28, 2024.

Just a year and a half later, on April 16, 2026, Qaqortoq in South Greenland also welcomed its new airport. Now, the spotlight turns to Ilulissat, where a new airport is set to open on October 29, marking a major milestone for Greenland as it launches a second international hub for its national carrier.

How Significant is the New Airport?

This new international airport will substantially enhance connectivity to Ilulissat, Disko Bay, and North Greenland, allowing travelers to fly directly from Copenhagen and bringing one of Greenland’s most stunning regions closer to Denmark. The Ilulissat airport will be equipped with an expanded runway, increasing from 845 meters to 2,200 meters, together with a new terminal, service building, and control tower. This development is expected to boost growth in the local tourism industry, capitalizing on the area’s stunning landscapes, including the iconic Ilulissat Icefjord, known for its massive icebergs and the dramatic calving of the Greenland Ice Sheet.

The expansion of the airport in Ilulissat will significantly improve transportation connections across the country. With an increase in direct flights, travelers can expect reduced costs, shorter travel times, and lower carbon emissions due to fewer domestic trips within Greenland.

Air Greenland Launches New Connection

In conjunction with the airport’s opening, Air Greenland is launching a new connection between Ilulissat and Copenhagen. The inaugural flight will be operated by Air Greenland’s Airbus A330neo, Tuukkaq, with the regular winter schedule commencing in November.

Initially, Jettime will operate the route between Copenhagen and Ilulissat using a Boeing 737-800, with flights primarily scheduled for Wednesdays and additional Monday departures around the Christmas and New Year holidays, as well as in March.

Flight GL707 will depart Copenhagen at 9:45 a.m., arriving in Ilulissat at 11:45 a.m. The return flight, GL708, will leave Ilulissat at 1:15 p.m. and reach Copenhagen at 9:00 p.m. All times are local, and the schedule is subject to change.

Brand New Plane Arriving Soon

Starting in April 2027, Air Greenland’s new Airbus A320neo, Unaaq, will take over this route. The flight schedule will gradually expand, with up to six weekly direct flights between Copenhagen and Ilulissat during the peak summer season.
