All flights at Leipzig/Halle Airport were temporarily suspended overnight following a security incident involving the reported sighting of a drone with an unidentified object attached to it. As a precaution, all operations were suspended while police and bomb disposal specialists investigated the area.
The disruption began shortly before midnight and affected both cargo and passenger planes. Operations resumed after the northern runway reopened in the early hours of Wednesday, while the southern runway remained closed for further investigation.
According to German police and flight tracking services, several flights were forced to divert during the night, including at least one passenger aircraft and a cargo aircraft, while emergency teams examined the suspicious object using a remote-controlled disposal robot. The temporary shutdown lasted until shortly before 2 a.m., when traffic resumed on the northern runway.
Leipzig/Halle is one of Europe’s most important cargo hubs, serving major logistics operators alongside scheduled passenger services, making even a short interruption operationally significant.
Investigators are now working to determine whether the drone sighting and the suspicious object were connected and who is responsible for the drone. Police also stated that there is currently no danger to the public, and no injuries were reported during the incident.
