After More Than 22 Years, LOT Says Goodbye To Embraer E170

After over 22 years, LOT Polish Airlines retired its last Embraer E170 aircraft. The last flight was operated by a plane registered as SP-LDH between Vienna and Warsaw.

On October 30, the Polish national airline, LOT Polish Airlines, bid farewell to its last Embraer E170 aircraft, marking the conclusion of an extraordinary 22-year journey that has left an indelible mark on the airline’s history. This remarkable journey began when LOT made aviation history by operating the very first E-Jet commercial flight, a significant milestone that showcased the airline’s commitment to innovation and excellence in air travel.

The final aircraft, registered as SP-LDH, completed its last passenger rotation between the vibrant cities of Warsaw and Vienna on that memorable day. This route holds special significance, as it was also the inaugural route for the E170 when it entered service on March 17, 2004, with the registration SP-LDA, symbolizing a full circle in its operational legacy.

History of E170 in LOT’s fleet

Over the years, LOT Polish Airlines operated a fleet of ten E170s, each designed to accommodate between 70 and 76 passengers, providing a comfortable and efficient travel experience. The airline proudly reports that these aircraft collectively transported an impressive total of 13.8 million passengers across nearly 300,000 flights, a testament to their reliability and popularity among travelers.

The first E170, SP-LDA, made its way to LOT Polish Airlines on March 8, 2004, after a ferry flight that included stops in Recife, Espargos, and Málaga, reflecting its South American origins and the global nature of modern aviation. Just eleven days later, it successfully completed its inaugural commercial flight, marking the beginning of a new era for LOT.

The E170 was not just another aircraft in LOT’s fleet; it was a pioneer, introducing advanced features that set new standards in the industry. With fully electronic fly-by-wire technology and winglets designed to enhance aerodynamics, the E170 was engineered for both efficiency and passenger comfort. Its wingspan of 85 feet 5 inches (26 meters) and a length of 98 feet, one inch (30 meters) allowed it to navigate various routes with ease, accommodating between 70 and 76 passengers depending on the specific configuration chosen for each flight.

Throughout its service, the E170 connected LOT Polish Airlines to key domestic and international destinations beyond Warsaw, including the bustling Václav Havel Airport in Prague, the scenic Copenhagen Airport, and the vibrant Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport. These connections not only facilitated travel for millions but also strengthened cultural and economic ties across the regions served.

Future of LOT’s regional fleet

As LOT Polish Airlines transitions into a new era with the introduction of the state-of-the-art E195-E2 fleet, it will continue to operate the E175, E190, and E195 models while bidding a heartfelt farewell to the E170.

The airline is also preparing to enhance its regional fleet significantly, with ambitious plans to incorporate 40 Airbus A220s, set to be delivered between 2027 and 2031. This evolution reflects LOT’s unwavering commitment to modernizing its fleet, embracing cutting-edge technology, and providing exceptional service to its passengers, ensuring that they continue to enjoy a world-class travel experience for years to come.
