Southwest Airlines is now Pioneering flight searches through ChatGPT

Southwest Airlines is bringing flight searches to ChatGPT, allowing travellers to explore flight options, compare fares and refine their travel plans through conversational AI.

On 6th October 2026, Southwest Airlines became the first US airline to offer flight searches via ChatGPT. This means travellers can search for flights, compare fares and refine itineraries all without visiting the airline’s official website.

Developed in collaboration with OpenAI and Amazon Web Services, this search capability enhances flight searches by allowing customers to interact directly with Southwest’s flight information through ChatGPT. This makes Southwest the first US airline to introduce this type of ChatGPT flight-shopping integration.

This new service lets travellers describe their travel plans naturally, bypassing the traditional airline search form. Simply enter prompts like:

  • “Show me Southwest flights from Chicago to Denver on 15 August.”
  • “Which Southwest flights have the lowest cash fares for these dates?”
  • “Help me find a Southwest flight with a departure after 6 p.m.”

Travellers can also include details like their departure airport, destination, travel dates, number of passengers, preferred departure time, budget and whether they want a direct flight. ChatGPT then presents relevant Southwest flight options, schedules and fares.

Southwest Airlines is capitalising on the growing influence of artificial intelligence on consumer behaviour and decision-making. Travel, in particular, benefits from conversational AI due to its flexible nature and the need for assistance in comparing various options. Consequently, airlines are exploring AI applications in customer service, trip planning, personalised recommendations, and operational processes. By integrating ChatGPT into their flight search, Southwest aims to engage travellers earlier in the decision-making journey, bypassing the need for a direct visit to their website.

This ChatGPT integration marks an early step towards a more conversational approach to airline shopping. While customers will still complete their purchases on Southwest.com, the technology promises a faster and more natural initial search experience.
