Erkelenz – A light aircraft crashed in the Gerderath district of Erkelenz in the Heinsberg district on Monday morning. All three people on board were killed in the accident. The exact cause of the crash is not yet known.
The crash occurred at around 11:20 a.m. in a field near Gerderath. According to initial information from the Heinsberg district police, three people were on board the aircraft. All three died at the scene.
The aircraft was severely damaged and largely destroyed upon impact. Emergency services secured the crash site. Numerous firefighters, paramedics and police officers were deployed to the scene. A German Armed Forces helicopter also flew to the site of the accident.
Aircraft Disappeared from Tracking Shortly Before the Crash
It is still unclear what happened in the minutes leading up to the crash. Eyewitnesses reported that the aircraft had been flying unusually low over the area. Shortly afterwards, the aircraft reportedly crashed into a field near a wooded area at high speed. Whether these observations are connected to the cause of the crash remains unclear.
According to the flight-tracking platform Flightradar24, the aircraft was a single-engine Cessna 172 Skyhawk. The aircraft is believed to have previously departed from the Netherlands. Available flight-tracking data shows that the aircraft could no longer be tracked in the area between the villages of Gerderhahn and Schwanenberg, both of which are located near Gerderath.
The available flight-tracking data can initially only provide indications of the aircraft’s flight path. The exact altitude and speed of the aircraft immediately before the crash, as well as why it lost altitude, will have to be determined by the authorities investigating the accident.
Investigation Underway
Police and the relevant authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the crash. Among other things, investigators are expected to reconstruct the aircraft’s exact flight path. Technical examinations of the wreckage could also provide information on whether a technical problem may have contributed to the accident.
At this stage, there are no confirmed findings regarding what caused the aircraft to crash. Further details about the flight and the three people on board have also not yet been released.
