A Lufthansa crew member died on Friday, October 30, 2026, during a scheduled layover in Bengaluru, India. The airline confirmed the incident to the aviation website aero.de that evening. The accident occurred during a layover, when flight crews stay at a hotel between two flights.
According to information from the BILD newspaper, the deceased was a Lufthansa captain who is said to have suffered a fatal electric shock in the swimming pool of the Conrad Hotel in Bengaluru. According to the report, several crew members were in the pool area at the time of the accident. When the underwater lighting was turned on, the water is said to have become electrified for reasons that remain unclear.
In addition to the captain, two other crew members are said to have been seriously injured. These include a senior flight attendant and another colleague who attempted to come to the pilot’s aid. Both were reportedly taken to a local hospital for medical treatment.
Further details regarding their condition were not immediately available.
Crew Was on a Routine Layover
According to media reports, the crew in question had previously traveled from Munich to Bengaluru on Lufthansa Flight LH764. The long-haul flight, which lasts about eight and a half hours, is operated by an Airbus A350-900. Upon arrival, the crew began their routine layover before their next flight assignment.
Such layovers are a regular part of the duty schedule, particularly in long-haul operations. They allow pilots and cabin crew to observe the required rest periods between their assignments. The accident therefore occurred outside of actual flight operations.
On Friday evening, Lufthansa issued a statement expressing deep condolences over the death. In a statement to aero.de, the company confirmed that a member of its crew had died in an accident while staying in Bengaluru. At the same time, the airline expressed its deepest condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.
Out of respect for the privacy of those involved, Lufthansa did not provide any further details regarding the identity of the deceased crew member or the exact circumstances of the accident. Reports of an electric shock in the hotel pool were therefore not officially confirmed at this time.
Cause of Accident Under Investigation
The exact circumstances of the accident remain the subject of a police investigation in India. In particular, investigators must determine how the alleged electric shock could have occurred. It has not yet been conclusively established whether there was actually a defect in the underwater lighting.
According to information from the BILD newspaper, Lufthansa is already searching for alternative accommodation for its crews in Bengaluru as a result of the incident. There was initially no official confirmation of this measure.
The incident therefore does not concern the technical or operational aspects of a Lufthansa flight, but rather the accommodation of a crew during their scheduled rest period. What further consequences the airline will draw from the incident remains to be seen, as does the outcome of the ongoing investigation.
